PLACE FOR WRITERS

Less a place than a community, The Place for Writers produces a roving series of programs and readings. Our focus is on building relationships outside of the classroom—among Mills graduate students, writers, scholars, and activists—and between Mills and Bay Area communities.

Next Critical Works in Progress, Monday, November 5

The semester is clipping right along, and The Place for Writers has more events! Join us on Monday, November 5, 2012, for the second Critical Works in Progress presentation, where MA candidate, Mateja Lane, will be giving a talk entitled:

The Power of Love: Saving Russia from the “Underground” in Dostoevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov

Mateja will discuss how the protagonists in The Brothers Karamazov are saved from their inherent “underground” self-destruction through the teachings of active Russian Orthodox Christian love. She will then argue that Dostoevsky was using The Brothers Karamazov, his final and possibly most admirable work, to persuade public conversion and ultimately turn Russia away from its disintegration toward the “underground” toward a Christian Orthodox Utopia.

When: Monday, November 5, 2012
Time: 12:20 to 12:50 p.m.
Where: Mills Hall 322
Tea and coffee will be served, and as always, everyone is free to bring a lunch.
